Responsible for reviewing, analyzing, auditing for accuracy, approving and underwriting loans following underwriting/credit policies, guidelines from outside lenders, government agencies and all regulatory laws, regulatory guidance and NY/Federal statutes. 

Required Skills

  • Evaluates and ensures overall loan documentation is accurate, complete, and compliant.
  • Analyzes the cash flow and financial condition of the borrower. Reviews financial statements, credit reports, applicable ratios i.e. debit ratios, loan-to-value ratio, and other supporting documentation.
  • Utilizes both manual and automated underwriting methods to determine acceptability of requests and make appropriate decisions.
  • Reviews property appraisals to ensure they meet the Bank's or agencies policies, guidelines and practices and regulatory laws and statues.
  • Effectively and efficiently maintains standard (24-48) hour underwriting turnaround time for new loan submissions, and standard (24) hour underwriting turnaround time for resubmission.
  • Maintains and ensures adherence to all state and federal regulations affecting the underwriting and issuance of credit to borrowers.
  • Provides consistent high level assistance to the Bank's lending officers and staff regarding underwriting related questions and/or issues.
  • Ensures the quality and accuracy of each loan.
  • Reviews and may sign off loan denials.
  • Maintains a strong working knowledge and understanding of lending and underwriting regulations and specific investor/agency underwriting guidelines and requirements.
  • May assist with underwriting research, training, new procedures as well as interpreting and communicating underwriting guideline changes.
  • Handles the tasks of approving loans up to lending authority as well as recommending lending decisions on those loans that require approval by a higher lending authority.
  • Adhere to confidentiality policy, code of ethics and follow all policies and procedures relative to Consumer Compliance laws and regulations and best practice recommendations.
Required Experience


  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent work experience
  • 5+ years of mortgage underwriting experience to include FHA and VA government loans.
  • Must have extensive background making credit decision on all types of FHA and VA transactions on a delegated and non-delegated basis
  • Must possess recent knowledge of agency guidelines
  • Proficiency with DU and LP
  • DE certification required
  • Knowledge of compliance with federal and state regulations pertaining to the banking/lending industry.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to handle situations with a positive, customer service driven answers when communicating with internal and external customers.
  • Strong organizational skills; ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast paced, diverse and growth-oriented environment.
  • Knowledge of financial processes, credit financial and statistical analysis.
  • Analytical skills; sound judgment and decision-making abilities.
  • Effective negotiation skills; ability to communicate with diplomacy and tact.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Personal computer skills to include various software packages, including word processing, spreadsheet, electronic mail and presentation, banking and/or lending systems.
